James (Young Suk) Yoon
Ph.D. Candidate @ the University of Washington-Seattle
Hi there! I’m James, and I’m a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Atmospheric & Climate Science at the University of Washington. I am co-advised by Alex Turner and Joel Thornton.
I’m an atmospheric chemistry modeler who uses a hierarchy of models, ranging from global chemical transport models (e.g. GEOS-Chem) to large-eddy simulations, to interpret satellite retrievals. I’m particularly interested in biosphere-atmosphere interactions and tropical atmospheric chemistry, specifically isoprene/VOC and NOx emissions and chemistry. In addition to atmospheric chemistry, I’m interested in phytoplankton, vegetation remote sensing, and the land carbon sink.
Previously, I was an undergraduate researcher at the University of California - Los Angeles working on nitrous acid (HONO) chemistry modeling. I also have a background in Asian American Studies, science communication/education, and digital humanities.
I am currently on the market for postdoctoral opportunities starting anytime between January to June 2027.
